Dental implants are titanium tooth roots that stimulate the jawbone and stabilize an artificial tooth replacement. They differ from dentures in that the end result looks and functions like real teeth. With implants, there is no slippage or need for nightly removal. However, like any prosthetic, implants have their list of do’s and don’ts to ensure they last a lifetime.
One
Caring for dental implants
First, it is important to note that an oral surgeon will surgically install dental implants. The oral surgeon will insert these titanium or ceramic posts into the jawbone before placing dental crowns on top of the posts. Crowns are tooth-like dental restorations secured by implants as permanent fixtures in the mouth.
Since implants require oral surgery, caring for them involves time and patience. Here are the basics of how patients can take care of their dental implants immediately after surgery and in the years that follow:
Do’s
Take it easy during recovery
Dental implant surgery requires some downtime. Patients should take about three days of rest before returning to work and daily activities. The oral surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help with discomfort and antibiotics to lower the chances of infection. Take these as directed. Pushing through the pain will make for a more uncomfortable recovery.
Note that it will take months for implants to fuse with the jawbone in a process known as osseointegration. The oral surgeon will place a temporary crown for use during this time. Placing a permanent crown before osseointegration is complete may cause the implants to fail.
Transition back to solid foods slowly
Patients must eat soft foods immediately after getting dental implants. They can gradually introduce hard foods into their diet as they heal. Starting with soups, yogurt, and pudding, then moving on to pasta, rice, and eggs will help to ensure recovery and decrease any risks that impede recovery. Most patients find they can return to eating hard, solid foods (like meat and raw vegetables) in a couple of weeks.
Practice good oral hygiene
Practicing good oral hygiene will allow the patient to heal faster and help their dental implants last for years to come. The oral surgeon will explain how to clean the implant site immediately after surgery. Once the patient fully heals, they should brush and floss around their implants as they would their natural teeth. This is crucial. While the implants cannot decay, the gums around them can become infected and diseased.
Don’ts
Do not exercise for 72 hours
Patients should not exercise for at least 72 hours after dental implant surgery. As mentioned above, they must rest to facilitate healing. Do not lift heavy boxes, run, or do anything that will increase heart rate, pain, and inflammation.
Do not chew with the implant right away
It is recommended not to chew with a dental implant for at least two weeks after surgery. This includes chewing soft foods such as eggs and rice. To prevent complications, chew with the other side of the mouth.
